Power and Energy Workshop

Presentations from Workshop held 22-23 March 2011, Noordwijk, The Netherlands

The "next generation of power and energy measurements" is a joint research project of National Measurement Institutes throughout the EU. The project was devised to migrate the highest-level techniques in ac electrical measurements from the laboratory to practical on-site measurements of power and power quality for utilities and manufacturers.

The project has resulted in an array of new measurement equipment, algorithms and software to provide the infrastructure to enable the measurement of complex electrical parameters in practical conditions.

This workshop attended by 75 delegates from industry and national laboratories was a showcase for the project outputs and an opportunity to discuss the future applications of this work to on-site power and energy measurements. A description will be given of the development of a 6 channel digitizer for on-site power and energy measurements. The instrument uses a DSP and Ethernet interface to PC for real time measurements of power and power quality parameters. It incorporates voltage ranging and Rogowski coil integrators for interfacing with transducers.

The development of AC-DC current shunts with low AC-DC differences, covering currents from 30 mA to 20 A, with a frequency range up to 1 MHz at 1 A, and 200 KHz up to 20A; and the development of AC-DC voltage dividers with division ratios 1000:1, 400:1, and 10:1 for the voltage range 10 V to 1000 V, and frequencies up to 1 MHz. Some results of their characterisation will be presented during the talk.

Measuring systems and methods for determination of phase and amplitude characteristics of current shunts and voltage dividers ranging from 5 mA to 100 A and 4 V to 1000 V up to 1 MHz using commercially available sampling hardware.

15:35 The development and performance of high current shunts for power measurements
The presentation shows both the development of transducers capable of transforming currents in the range 20 A to 100 A to voltages of about 0.5 V and the methods to characterize these shunts. Four national institutes were involved in the measurements of frequency dependence and phase angle error up to a frequency of 100 kHz and in the determination of power and temperature coefficient.

16:05 Methods and comparisons of asynchronous Sampling applied to ac measurements
Most decisions in electric power supply systems rely on accurate measurements and most of these measurements rely on a few parameters, such as frequency, amplitude and phase of the fundamental signal. Accurate estimation of these parameters from sampled real-life signals will be discussed and newly developed algorithms will be presented in comparison with the known solutions.

16:25 Application of adaptive noise cancelling filters in ac electrical measurements
Noise cancelling filters are well established in commercial products, this talk will describe their implementation and use in a metrology setting for the cancellation of magnetic coupled noise and beat frequency related noise. The methods developed are intended to be used to improve future on-site measurements in high noise environments.

9:40 High current ac metrology using Rogowski coils
The main advantage of a Rogowski coil over traditional current transformers is its inherent linearity with applied current and frequency. This characteristic, combined with low weight, makes it ideal for on-site high current measurement and calibration purposes. Methods to lower the uncertainty of Rogowski coil measurements are discussed, and the outcome of applying them to the measurement of kiloampere currents are presented.

10:00 Measurement of high impulse currents by Rogowski and Pearson coils
The understanding of high current events such as short circuit transients and impulse currents is important for the management of power quality. The work carried out is focused on characterizing metrology grade current transducers for on-site traceable measurements of 8/20 µs (rise/fall time) impulse currents up to 60 kA peak value with a target uncertainty of 0.1 % for the complete measurement system. We have chosen a comparison method that relies on the use of two current transducers, Pearson and Rogowski coils, that will detect simultaneously the same impulse current.

11:00 The effect of mains impedance on harmonics and flicker measurements
In-situ measurements of power quality parameters are performed under the specific conditions of the electricity supply network while the measurement equipment is calibrated using laboratory set-ups under reference conditions defined in specialised standards. A low voltage network model was developed and used to simulate small variations of the network impedance and to study their influence on the harmonic and flicker measurements at the point of connection.

A description will be given of the integration and testing of the hardware and software developed in this project for an on-site power quality measurement. It is hoped that the experiences from an on-site measurement will be reported (currently scheduled for March 2011).
