The aim of this workpackage is to develop four types of photon sources that can operate from frequencies below 10 GHz up to about 300 GHz. The sources are complimentary in that they cover different frequency ranges and emit different types of radiation. We plan to use two single photon sources (4 GHz - 18 GHz and 10 GHz - 80 GHz, respectively), two Josephson-junction-based monochromatic sources (10 GHz - 300 GHz), and one emitter of thermal radiation (30 GHz - 300 GHz). They also differ in the amount of development needed; Josephson junction based sources and the thermal source could be made available to all JRP-Partners at a relatively early stage and would be used for the development and initial characterisation of the detectors, whereas the single photon sources would primarily be used for the later stages of WP3.
The overriding aim for this workpackage is to develop devices that can be used as practical sources, while still exceeding the performance of state-of-the-art instrumentation.
All sources will be fabricated on-chip using lithographic methods and can therefore be integrated with the detectors developed in WP1.
