Outputs
A key outcome of DREAMSys research and development will be the formation of a world Centre-of-Excellence on the application of MEMS microphone technologies to environmental noise problems.
The DREAMSys will include new, high performance MEMS measurement microphones. Driven by the needs of consumer products such as mobile phones, extremely low cost MEMS microphone now exist, but fall short of the necessary operational performance demanded by precision measurement applications. Therefore, a new breed of MEMS microphone will be developed, as well as associated instrumentation modules and software for data gathering, data fusion, and display. This will lead to the following outputs:
- Production of the first MEMS microphone with measurement grade specifications, suitable for outdoor use for a prolonged period.
- Establishment of a large wireless sensor array (DREAMSys) and analysis software for the distributed measurement of environmental noise.
- Long-term deployment of DREAMSys at specially selected locations where a variety of noise sources are present, to enable techniques to be developed for integrating noise data with prediction, and to demonstrate the impact of the DREAMSys on the current noise mapping approach.
- Development of best practice guidance for use of such monitoring systems and a future strategy for noise mapping, combining prediction and low-cost measurements.
